Sri Madiyala Narayana Bhat is born in Madiyala. His simple upbringing and deep spiritual values shape his lifelong belief that education is a basic human right, not a business.

A Calling Discovered
At just 23, Narayana Bhat takes charge as Headmaster of a high school in Dakshina Kannada. The experience convinces him that real education cannot be a business — it must be an act of service.
1960–1963
Loka Seva Vrinda Begins & Alike Campus Established
Driven to serve the nation, Anna gathers a dedicated band of workers — the Tyagajeevi — and forms Loka Seva Vrinda in 1960, dedicating their lives to rural upliftment. The organisation is formally launched, and on 6 June 1963, his mother, Smt. Gouramma, hands over the primary school in Alike to Loka Seva Vrinda, establishing the first major campus.
1967–1972
Expansion of Alike Campus
The Alike campus grows significantly, marked by the inauguration of the Loka Seva Junior College.
1972
Muddenahalli Campus & Divine Assurance
The mission expands to a second location in Muddenahalli. Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba blesses the construction of the school building there and resolves their financial worries with a profound reassurance: "Shaale madidare saala hoguttade" (ಶಾಲೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಸಾಲ ಹೋಗುತ್ತದೆ) — "If you build a school, the debt will go away." He instructs Anna's team to build this second school in Muddenahalli, promising that all debts would be taken care of.

A Letter of Solace
As news of Narayana Bhat's passing reaches Puttaparthi, Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba writes personally to the grieving family — words of comfort, and an assurance that the mission Anna had begun would not be allowed to falter.

Consoling a Mother's Grief
Baba goes further still, personally consoling Anna's mother, Smt. Gouramma, in her sorrow — a closeness that binds the family, and the institutions they built together, ever more firmly to him.

Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust
Following Narayana Bhat's passing, the organisation is renamed Sri Sathya Sai Loka Seva Trust. Baba signs to affirm the transition, ensuring the continued operation of both campuses.
2011
A New Beginning
Rooted in the foundational vision of Loka Seva begun by Anna, and inspired by the universal humanitarian mandate nurtured by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, the mission of selfless service continues to grow without pause. Following Baba's passing in 2011, this living legacy enters a transformative era: under the guidance of Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai, the commitment to free, value-based education and compassionate healthcare expands into a truly global movement.
2012–2023
Higher Education Expansion & University Recognition
The vision expands into higher education with the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence in Gulbarga (Kalaburagi). New campuses follow across the region through the decade, and in 2018 the Government of Karnataka grants official university status — opening the way for free undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes.
2023
World's First Free Medical College
Under the University's umbrella, the Sri Madhusudan Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (SMSIMSR) is established in Muddenahalli. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25 March 2023, it stands as the world's first completely free medical college, training doctors to serve the needy and underserved with absolutely no tuition fees.
November 2025
The Madiyala Campus Is Announced
On the occasion of Anna's birthday, the Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence formally announces the new Madiyala campus — home to the free Bachelors in Computational Sciences and Artificial Intelligence. The Tyagajeevis gather together with Sadguru Sri Madhusudan Sai to mark the moment, a year ahead of the campus's planned completion for Anna's centenary.
November 2026
A Century and Still Batting! — The Madiyala Campus
To mark the 100th birth anniversary of founder Sri Madiyala Narayana Bhat (Anna) on 30 November 2026, the mission comes full circle to his native soil. The Sri Sathya Sai University for Human Excellence is establishing a brand-new campus in Madiyala/Alike alongside a free public healthcare facility — offering modern, degree-level education, including a Bachelors in Computational Sciences and Artificial Intelligence, and equipping rural youth with technological mastery, completely free of cost.
